Reporter Profiles

Chris

My name is Chris I am 16 years old and live in Bonnyrigg with my parents and sister.

I got involved with the Festival Radio Project as I am currently working with others to help build a community radio station for Midlothian, and this acts as experience and training that I will be able use once we are broadcasting.

I have enjoyed ther project as it has allowed me a chance to learn how to review a show and interview people. If you are interested in how the media works then festival radio project is a good chance.

Diana

My name is Diana and I am 17 years old. I moved to the UK from Bulgaria two years ago and now I live near Edinburgh with my parents. In my free time I like going out with my friends and I like listening to music (Eminem, Dr.Dre, DMX…that kind of stuff). I also enjoy doing various sports such as rugby, basketball, volleyball, badminton etc. I’m interested in computers and I like making my own music as well.

I was attending a meeting with the community radio steering group when I found out about the Festival Radio Project. I thought it would be good experience and it turned out to be fun as well. Cat and I even recorded a broadcast on comedy and laughter!

Graeme

After attending the committee meetings of a group trying to set up a local radio station in my area, I was told about the Festival Radio Project and decided to come along. In the future I hope to become a broadcast journalist and felt it would be relevant experience for me.

Festival Radio has been an experience which I feel has given me some insight into what broadcasting involves and the processes that go on behind the scenes. It has been very enjoyable, yet it is quite disheartening when no-one on the streets want to talk to you! Perhaps if I said I was from the BBC...

Catriona

Hi. My name is Catriona I am 15 years old. I live in Lasswade on the outskirts of Edinburgh. I live with my mum, my dad, and my sister. We have lots of pets, two dogs, three fish, two ferrets, one budgie, one tortoise, and lots of sheep, (they’re my dads).

In my spare time I play Rugby at Murrayfield under16’s, Watch rugby, and never stop talking about it. I like going out with my friends and watching the programme ‘Friends’.

I decided to come to festival radio because I am interested in how radio programmes are produced and to learn new skills.

Jonny

It’s all about me!! My name is Jonathan but call me Jonny because the only person that calls me “Jonathan” is my mother. 19 years ago a great thing happened: I was born and the world became a better place. I am currently getting ready to start my second year of music at Jewel and Esk Valley College, where I play bass, guitar and keyboard (the last one badly). Since music is so important in my life I have an eclectic taste from metal to jazz to classical symphonies. Right now my favourite bands are the mighty Primus, Incubus, Audioslave and Greenday’s old stuff (Dookie and Nimrod etc).

When I’m not at college I am a slave to wage at Tesco in Dalkeith, practicing with my band, or at the Midlothian Community Radio Station project, which is how I got involved with the Festival Radio Project. I have four cats that I adore and a big sister that I despise (not really). Anyways, my head hurts so I think that’s enough, cheery-oh.

Caroline

My name is Caroline, I am 22 and have recently graduated from Edinburgh University. Whilst at university I was involved in the student radio station, where I first became interested in radio and broadcasting. I gained experience of radio having my own show and performing interviews for the station. However, I felt that I would like to improve my interview technique and sound editing skills and the festival radio project was an ideal opportunity for me to expand these skills.

Although I do not plan on pursuing a career in media, I would like to continue my interest through becoming involved in community or hospital radio. I would also like to increase my radio production and technical skills.

Laura

Hi my name is Laura and I’m 16 years old I live in Mayfield with my mum, and my little sister Amy and her pet hamster Sandy.
My best sport is wrestling.
I come from GLASGOW I lived there for 11 years then I moved to EDINBURGH.
I also have two older sisters Leanne who’s 21 and Biffy (Elizabeth)

When I grow up I want to be a wrestler as it looks like a great job and I love wrestling I like T.V playing basketball football and going to the gym I also like wrestling and kickboxing, I support Glasgow’s Celtic and Man u.

I Like Greenday.

Sylvia

My name is Sylvia and I hail from the Penicuik hutch in Midlothian.

I graduated in 1997 from Queen Margaret University Collage Edinburgh with a degree in Combined Studies [Social Science and Health, Psychology and Media and Cultural Studies]. Having retired last year after 36 years nursing, I now use my skills and newly acquired knowledge, working with various volunteer groups in the Edinburgh and Midlothian areas.

My secondment with the Festival Radio Project came about through my involvement with the Midlothian Community Media Association and the 50+ Ageing Well Project which deals with health issues associated with the ‘elderly’.

As I recently became a grandma to twin girls, I decided to focus my attention on children’s shows that are being presented during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This experience has proved to be challenging but great fun. In view of my advancing years [!!] I see myself as the ‘groovy granny of the group’ a profile, I am, so far, proud to hold.
