Radio Days are workshops available to primary schools with teacher’s notes provided, by Media Education, to help prepare for the workshop. Up to four classes at a time can experience producing their own radio broadcasts. These can be themed radio packages concentrating on current school work or can take the form of an hour long live broadcast including news, weather, charts, interviews, jingles, sport, sound effects and competitions with all of the pupils taking on a role and getting the chance to present. The session ends with a playback of the radio show, the class is presented with a tape to keep as a memento of their experience. One teacher commented “It was really good for the children to see all the equipment needed in a real studio and how it was used to make continuous sound” (Prestonfield Primary, Edinburgh). Radio Days’ have featured at the Scottish International Children’s Festival, the Edinburgh International Science Festival and the Galway International Children’s Festival. A Primary 5/6 pupil enjoyed their Radio Day experience “My favourite part of the morning was doing the script and speaking into the microphone because it was a new and interesting experience”.
