Since 2020, Media Education and Briege Nugent have been working alongside an advisory group made up of people from two focus communities -
Young parents
People from global majority backgrounds and people with experience of migration.
We were asked to research why these two demographic groups did not access mental health services in Edinburgh in the same way as other people in the community did. From the beginning we set about this task in a different way from traditional research. 23 people from 12 different countries make up the advisory group. We have worked as a non hierarchical team as co-enquirers. People are paid for their time at real living wage and we have codesigned qualifications certified by Edinburgh College for involvement. Each person has been able to identify their own line of enquiry and work with film professionals to receive the training to create documentary films on the issue they identified. Training and support has also been given to everyone to carry out their own fieldwork and reporting. Together we are now writing up our methodology and learning. The learning from this project and our methodology is extensive and we are interested to share this and learn from others as we write our report.
