Shared Sentences
with Community Justice Partners
about the project
Shared Sentences is an accredited Participatory Video Project delivered by Media Education in collaboration with Community Justice Partners, Edinburgh College and people with lived experience of the justice system.
The purpose of the project is to collaborate with people with lived experience of the justice system to co-produce films, in a non-hierarchical media team, that bring the work of Community Justice Partners to life.
Films are created that communicate the services, initiatives, findings and plans of Community Justice Partners. They are used for training and learning, to amplify messages and to drive forward social change within communities.
Public screenings and campaigns surrounding the films, led by lived experience collaborators, look to support people to reconnect and contribute to their communities.
what we did
We worked with Community Justice Glasgow form a collaborative media team called ‘Ripple Effect’ with people with lived experience of the justice system. They took part in Peer Research workshops based on how to look after the storyteller and manage their own lived experience in a context close to home. They took part in planning and skills sessions to develop film themes and identify contributors. They took part in filming sessions to capture multi-perspective stories including personal testimonies from people with lived experience, interviews with service providers, context from Partners and documentary style visuals. They carried out reflective interviews with each other about the process to include within the films and as evidence for accreditation from Edinburgh College in “Access to Media”. They planned a co-facilitated a film screening event for to share their experiences and findings with the Community Justice Partnership and others with an interest in promoting social change. A record of the event can be watched here.
Our Shared Sentences films have been used to shape Community Justice Glasgow Plans, as training resources for nursing students around patient journeys and trauma informed practice and have toured festivals, youth clubs, colleges and community councils.
